Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has just unveiled innovative proposals aimed at significantly reducing transaction confirmation times on the network. These innovations could transform the user experience and strengthen Ethereum’s position in the crypto ecosystem.

Ethereum in search of speed to dominate the crypto market

Although Ethereum has made notable advances in recent years, the network still struggles to match the speed of newer blockchains.

With a block time of about 12 seconds, Ethereum lags behind competitors like Solana, capable of generating blocks in 0.4 seconds. This limitation hinders Ethereum’s adoption for certain applications requiring minimal latency.

To address this challenge, Buterin proposes several technical innovations. The most ambitious of which is the “single-slot finality (SSF)” or “finality in a single slot”, which would radically simplify the network’s architecture.

The main challenge of SSF is that, naively, it seems to imply that each participant of Ethereum would have to publish two messages every 12 seconds, which would be a significant load to manage for the chain.” Vitalik

This approach would eliminate the current system of epochs and slots, which is considered too complex. However, its implementation raises questions about the load supported by the blockchain.

A delicate balance between speed and decentralization

Another promising path involves “based pre-confirmations”. This mechanism would allow users to pay additional fees in exchange for a guaranteed inclusion of their transaction in the next block. Compatible with layer 2 solutions, it would offer an almost instantaneous experience for demanding applications.

While speed is crucial, Buterin insists on the importance of not compromising Ethereum’s fundamentals. Decentralization and security remain absolute priorities.

Ethereum’s current block time already represents a significant improvement over Bitcoin (10 minutes). Nevertheless, Buterin believes that some applications require latencies on the order of “hundreds of milliseconds, or even less”.

The challenge is therefore to find the right balance between performance and network integrity. Buterin’s proposals aim to push the limits while preserving the very essence of Ethereum.

In short, the forward-thinking ideas of Vitalik Buterin could redefine the standards of the crypto industry. If they come to fruition, these innovations would allow Ethereum to consolidate its leadership position while paving the way for new revolutionary applications in the blockchain universe.
