Some time ago, a monumental error led to an incredible situation for an Australian couple. Instead of receiving a refund of 65 dollars, Thevamanogari Manivel and her partner Jatinder Singh saw 6 million dollars credited to their account. This crypto error was unfortunately discovered much later, and the two lovers now risk prison!

An Australian couple receives 6 million dollars by mistake!

Errors in refund transactions are recurrent in the crypto ecosystem. In the case of this Australian couple, a crypto exchange attempted to refund 100 Australian dollars to Manivel. However, due to incorrect input of amounts, 10.5 million Australian dollars (approximately 6.7 million US dollars) were transferred to her bank account. Instead of reporting this error, the couple began to spend the money extravagantly! Buying houses, cars, and transferring a portion of the funds abroad.

Among the purchases made, the couple acquired four houses, including a five-bedroom property in Craigieburn, valued at 1.35 million Australian dollars. They also transferred about 4 million Australian dollars to a bank account in Malaysia. When the error was discovered, the crypto company filed a lawsuit to recover the funds. The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered the sale of the properties purchased with the ill-gotten money.

A decision with severe consequences for the two Australians

Manivel pleaded guilty to recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime. She was sentenced to 18 months of community service, including six months of unpaid work. Singh, on the other hand, still faces a trial for theft charges.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and integrity in the crypto field. Errors can occur, but the way they are managed can have serious consequences. For users of crypto platforms, it is crucial to immediately report any anomaly to avoid legal repercussions like the former CEO of Binance who was sentenced to only 4 months in prison a few months ago.
