China announces a spectacular increase in tariffs on American products, which will rise to 84% starting April 10, 2025, at 12:01 PM. This decision is a direct response to Donald Trump, who had raised tariffs on Chinese imports to as high as 104% the day before!

China reacts to Trump’s tariffs: a response at 84%

Following the increase of tariffs of 104% on China by Donald Trump, the Middle Empire retaliates. In a statement released by the Customs Tariff Committee of the State Council, China strongly condemns this American measure, which it considers contrary to the rules of multilateral trade and harmful to the stability of the global economy. The text relies on Chinese laws and the principles of international law to justify the immediate entry into force of this measure.

The timing of this 84% response, less than 24 hours before the entry into force of American tariffs, underscores Beijing’s firmness. The complete list of targeted American products has not yet been published, but observers anticipate surcharges on sensitive sectors such as agriculture, technology, and the automotive industry.

Protectionist escalation and geopolitical tensions

This new tariff salvo risks amplifying the already exacerbated trade tensions since Trump’s return to the White House. As he pursues his confrontational strategy to protect American national industry, this Chinese response could worsen tensions in global markets and derail already fragile supply chains.

The tone is set: Beijing has no intention of yielding, but is nonetheless calling for a resumption of dialogue within the framework of fair trade. Speaking of dialogue, Japan has sent an official delegation to Washington to meet with American officials, in the hope of easing the growing trade tensions between the major economic powers.

This new escalation between China and Donald Trump marks a concerning turning point for the global economy. As customs tensions escalate, the outcome will depend on the major powers’ ability to re-establish dialogue. But in the meantime, what will Trump’s response be? Will he give an ultimatum to China again? The answer will certainly come in a few hours.
