Russia Wants to Revolutionize Bitcoin Mining in Africa
Russia is increasingly becoming one of the behemoths of Bitcoin mining in the world. This is evidenced by the news of the strategic expansion announced by the Russian mining firm BitCluster on the African continent. In January 2024, the company plans to deploy in Ethiopia, where it aims to set up a state-of-the-art data center.
Bitcoin Mining: Towards the Establishment of a 120 MW Data Center in Addis Ababa
In the latest news, Russia has undertaken a revolutionary Bitcoin (BTC) mining project in Africa. BitCluster, a Russian provider of Bitcoin mining solutions, unveiled on Sunday, December 24, a plan to this effect, in Ethiopia.
Indeed, the company plans to establish a 120 megawatts (MW) cutting-edge data center in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Its goal, to make this East African country a leading player in the crypto mining ecosystem.
The envisaged infrastructure is expected to cover 30,000 m², within the limits of the high-voltage Kilinto substation in Addis Ababa. Its operationalization is announced for January 2024. Work is underway to connect transformers to the data center.
In the long run, the project should change the game. At least, for analysts, the initiative has all the potential it needs to reshape the global Bitcoin mining ecosystem. An industry in which Russia claims a good second place behind the United States.
A Relevant Initiative for BitCluster?
Beyond its envisaged impact on the crypto mining segment, this data center project is designed to streamline BitCluster’s Bitcoin mining activities. According to the company, the initiative would allow it to operate as a full-cycle center.
The installation, which is expected to benefit from uninterrupted power supply, is designed to handle internal repairs. A choice that allows the company to save time and resources, improving the overall efficiency of its Bitcoin mining activities.
This is fundamentally a strategic approach. It not only improves the overall efficiency of the mining process but also positions BitCluster as a formidable player in the global Bitcoin mining arena. It should be noted that BitCluster appears to be committed to sustainable development. The reason being, the entire energy consumption that its Bitcoin mining operations in Ethiopia are expected to generate will come from renewable sources, specifically from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). As a reminder, this is one of the largest hydroelectric projects in Africa. This guarantees an impressively high operational uptime of 99% for the crypto installation.
