In 2024, the regulated savings accounts in France, the Livret A and the Livret de Développement Durable et Solidaire (LDDS), reported a record amount of 16.8 billion euros in interest to savers. This impressive sum was announced by the Caisse des Dépôts, highlighting the continued appeal of these savings products despite an uncertain economic context.

France: The Livret A and the LDDS report 16.8 billion euros to savers!

The Livret A and the LDDS benefited from an interest rate of 3% throughout the year 2024, which contributed to this exceptional performance. Moreover, the net collection for December 2024 was particularly strong, reaching 3.93 billion euros, the highest of the year. The total amount of both accounts also reached a record level, exceeding 600 billion euros on December 31, 2024.

This increase in the total amount, combined with a high interest rate, allowed savers to benefit from significant returns, reaching 16.8 billion euros. On average, each account generated about 210 euros for its holders, which represents a considerable sum for the approximately 80 million accounts opened.

This trend shows that the French continue to see the Livret A and the LDDS as reliable and advantageous savings options. Olivier Sichel, interim director general of the Caisse des Dépôts, emphasized that the Livret A remains a very attractive product for the French due to its tax exemption, capital guarantee, and liquidity.

A decrease expected for February 2025

However, it is expected that the interest rate for both accounts will decrease to 2.4% starting from February 1, 2025. This reduction could influence future returns, but the appeal of these savings products should remain strong, especially if the total amount continues to grow.

The year 2024 was thus marked by exceptional performances for the Livret A and the LDDS, offering French savers record returns. The expected decrease in the interest rate in 2025 will be a factor to watch, but the popularity of these savings accounts seems well entrenched in the savings habits in France.
