On December 10, 2024, Shaktikanta Das, outgoing Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), shared his vision to transform the Indian economy through a central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital rupee. During his farewell speech, Das emphasized the efforts made during his six-year term to capitalize on new technologies, notably by creating the RBI Innovation Hub in Bengaluru and a regulatory sandbox for fintech innovation.

Das expressed optimism about the future of CBDC in the Indian economy, stating that the digital rupee could definitively replace the paper-based economy.
