Crypto: With the Pectra Update, Ethereum Prepares for a True Revolution, Says Vitalik Buterin!
As the crypto ecosystem holds its breath, Ethereum is set to cross a historic milestone. Scheduled for March 2025, the Pectra update is not just about fixing bugs or adjusting parameters. It is redefining the very foundations of the network. Vitalik Buterin, an inexhaustible visionary, recently unveiled innovations that could transform Ethereum into a scaling machine and a consumer-friendly ecosystem. But behind the technical promises lies a deeper strategy: making Ethereum the backbone of an accessible Web3. Explanations.
Ethereum: The art of balancing urgency and long-term vision
Ethereum is often compared to a giant with feet of clay in the crypto universe. Powerful, but slow. Innovative, but complex. Pectra, with its 20 EIPs, addresses this paradox by juggling between immediate solutions and structural ambitions.
Consider the example of blobs, these essential data reservoirs for layer 2 (L2) solutions. Currently limited to three per location, they will increase to six with Pectra. A doubling that, on paper, seems modest.
However, this decision is a masterstroke. By increasing the capacity of L2s without waiting for more radical updates, Ethereum provides a breath of fresh air to developers and crypto users.
Vitalik Buterin even pushes the audacity further: what if the crypto community could vote to adjust this limit in the future? An unprecedented technical democratization, where ETH holders would become the architects of scalability.
But Pectra doesn’t put everything on infrastructure. The update also tackles a more insidious problem: the complexity of wallets.
Smart accounts and staking: The end of compromises?
Imagine having to sign twice to send a simple transfer. A UX nightmare that has long haunted Ethereum.
With EIP-7702, this nightmare comes to an end. Existing accounts become smart with a single click, without tedious migration. No more juggling between approvals and executions: a single signature is enough. A revolution for novices, but also for pros.
Behind this simplicity lies a ticking time bomb for adoption. Features like social recovery or multiple signatures are no longer reserved for insiders.
Even ERC-4337, the pioneer of smart accounts, suddenly seems obsolete. For with EIP-7702, Ethereum wipes away a major psychological barrier: the fear of losing one’s private keys.
In parallel, Pectra revisits another pillar: staking. EIP-7251 multiplies the limit of stake per validator (from 32 to 2048 ETH) by 64. The goal? To reduce the technical paperwork for large holders.
But this measure raises a crucial question: by making life easier for the “whales”, does Ethereum risk centralizing power? Vitalik Buterin’s response is subtle: by streamlining staking, the network attracts more capital… all while making its concentration less detrimental to overall efficiency.
