Facing New US Sanctions, China Seeks Allies in Europe
U.S.-China relations continue to deteriorate, prompting China to strengthen its ties with the European Union. Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Beijing views Europe as a “global strategic partner and an important and independent pillar in a multipolar world.”
China Goes on the Offensive!
This week, the Trump administration announced new 10% tariffs on Chinese imports, justifying this decision by accusing Beijing of not doing enough to curb the production of fentanyl precursor chemicals, a deadly opioid in the United States.
In response, China imposed tariffs on American coal and gas, while announcing export restrictions on certain strategic materials. These measures target approximately 20 billion dollars worth of American goods, reflecting a hardening of positions between the two powers.
Despite this escalation, Beijing seeks to avoid a prolonged trade war. “What we need now is not a unilateral increase in tariffs, but dialogue and discussions based on mutual respect,” asserted Lin Jian.
Europe Between Prudence and Opportunism
In light of this situation, China is turning to Europe in hopes of strengthening its trade and investment exchanges. However, Europeans remain cautious. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that the EU will continue its policy of risk limitation in its relations with Beijing, while seeking to “find solutions” for developing economic ties.
It should be noted that trade tensions between the EU and China have existed in the past. Furthermore, Europe recently increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, to which Beijing responded with anti-dumping measures on certain European products, such as cognac.
Faced with U.S.-China tensions, China is therefore seeking to strengthen its ties with Europe, which remains cautious in its commitments. Between economic opportunities and the desire to limit risks, the EU will need to balance its relations with Beijing without compromising its own strategic interests or aggravating its disputes with Washington.
